Dear Uprise Solar community,
We want to give you an update on what’s happening in the solar industry and how it affects homeowners in Washington, DC.
The federal tax credit for homeowners is ending December 31, 2025. Under the new “Big Beautiful Bill,” the rules were changed right out from under us. For customers purchasing their system, the credit can only be claimed if the solar installation is fully completed before the end of this year.
Here’s what that means in practice:
- Customers at risk of losing their tax credit will be prioritized. If you are purchasing your system outright (or via a loan), we are working overtime to give you the best possible chance of claiming the tax credit before it expires.
- No-cost systems remain available. Washington, DC’s unique solar laws keep the $0.00 power purchase agreement option alive through the second half of 2026. The new federal bill does not affect this.
- Patience from no-cost customers matters. By waiting until January, you are helping the solar community as a whole navigate this transition. Your projects are still locked in and protected, and your patience will help other families secure the tax credit before it disappears.
Thank you for being part of this journey. If you have not already signed up and are considering purchasing your system we cannot guarantee any more installations this year given Pepco delays, DC permitting backlogs, and weather.
That said, the return on investment for new purchases is still very strong; nearly a 4-year ROI even under the new rules without the tax credit.
If you are signed up for a no-cost system, thank you, thank you, thank you for your patience! You are helping your neighbors and the entire solar community by allowing customers at risk of losing the federal tax credit to move forward before the tax credit expires. These are not normal times, and your understanding means more than we can say.
Sincerely,
Patrick Cavanaugh
