What Does an Electric Bill Look Like After Going Solar?

May 29, 2026 · Patrick Cavanaugh · Homeowner FAQs + Guides, Solar Education, Solar In Maryland, Solar In Virginia, Solar in Washington DC

One of the most common questions homeowners ask before going solar is:

“What will my electric bill actually look like once the system is installed?”

The answer surprises a lot of people.

Whether you’re served by Pepco in Washington, DC, Dominion Energy in Virginia, BGE in Maryland, or another utility company, most homeowners continue receiving a monthly utility bill after going solar. The difference is that the bill often looks dramatically different than it did before.

Every utility formats its bill differently. Dominion Energy bills in Virginia look different from Pepco bills in DC, and BGE uses its own layout as well. But the core concepts are generally the same:

  • Electricity used from the grid
  • Electricity produced by your solar system
  • Net metering credits
  • Delivery and supply charges
  • Account balances and credits

To help explain how solar billing works in the real world, one of our customers shared their actual utility bill after having solar installed for more than a year. We’ve removed personal information for privacy, but the bill and results are real.

While this example comes from a Pepco customer in Washington, DC, the same principles apply to most solar homeowners throughout Maryland, Virginia, and DC.

Let’s walk through what you’re looking at and what it means.

The First Thing Most Homeowners Notice

When most homeowners open a solar bill, they immediately look for one thing:

What do I owe?

In this example, the homeowner’s account shows a credit balance of nearly $375, while the actual utility charges for the month totaled just $4.56.

The specific numbers will vary from home to home and from utility to utility, but the concept is the same: the solar system is offsetting electricity that would otherwise have been purchased from the utility company.

This is where many homeowners begin to see the long-term value of solar. Instead of buying all of their electricity from the utility, they’re generating a significant portion of it directly from their roof.

Yes, You Still Receive An Electric Bill After Going Solar

One of the biggest misconceptions about solar is that your utility bill disappears completely.

In reality, most solar homes remain connected to the electric grid through a system called net metering.

That means your home can:

  • Use solar power when the sun is shining
  • Pull electricity from the grid when needed
  • Send excess electricity back to the grid when production exceeds usage

Whether you have Pepco, Dominion Energy, BGE, or another utility, your bill is generally tracking those energy flows throughout the month.

That’s why understanding your bill becomes much easier once you know what the utility is actually measuring.

Understanding Net Metering

This section is one of the most important parts of any solar bill.

Net metering allows homeowners to receive credit for excess electricity their solar system sends back to the grid.

Think of the grid like a giant battery.

When your system produces more electricity than your home needs, those extra kilowatt-hours are exported to the utility grid. Depending on your state’s net metering rules, those exports create credits that can help offset electricity you use later.

The exact calculations differ between Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, but the basic concept remains the same.

Your solar system is helping reduce the amount of electricity you need to purchase from the utility company.

Why Most Solar Bills Still Show Small Charges

Many homeowners are surprised to see some charges remaining on their bill even after solar.

That’s normal.

Utilities still maintain the electric grid, transmission infrastructure, transformers, and metering equipment that your home relies on.

As a result, most utility bills include some combination of:

  • Delivery charges
  • Customer charges
  • Grid connection fees
  • Taxes and surcharges
  • Supply charges

The details vary by utility, but seeing a small remaining balance does not mean the solar system isn’t working.

In fact, many of the lowest solar bills still include minor utility charges.

The Section Every Solar Homeowner Should Learn To Read

If you’re trying to understand whether your system is performing well, this is often the most important section of the bill.

This area shows:

  • Electricity consumed
  • Electricity exported
  • Net metering credits
  • Excess generation balances

Learning how to read this section can tell you far more about your system’s performance than simply looking at the amount due each month.

Solar Is About More Than One Monthly Bill

While lower electric bills are certainly a major benefit, most homeowners we work with throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia are also motivated by other factors:

  • Protection from rising utility rates
  • Energy independence
  • Long-term home value
  • Environmental responsibility
  • Investing in infrastructure that can last 25 years or more

That’s why we encourage homeowners to look beyond a single month’s bill and understand how their solar system performs over the course of an entire year.

The real story is often found in the long-term trends, not just one billing cycle.

Want Help Understanding Your Utility Bill?

Whether you have Pepco, Dominion Energy, BGE, or another utility provider, our team can help you understand exactly what you’re seeing and how solar impacts your monthly electricity costs.

If you’re considering solar, or if you already have a system and want help understanding your bill, we’re always happy to walk through the numbers and answer questions.

No pressure. Just clear information from a local team that works with homeowners throughout DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia every day.
