If solar covers half your bill, should you install it now or wait for better technology? I hear this question often from homeowners whose roofs can only support a 50% or 60% solar offset.
They assume that panels will soon become so much more powerful that the same roof will eventually cover 100% of their electricity use. I understand the hope. However, that is usually not a realistic reason to delay solar.
Solar technology will continue to improve. Still, the improvements available to homeowners are more likely to be gradual than revolutionary. Meanwhile, every year spent waiting is another year of buying all your electricity from the utility.
If the system available today makes financial sense, waiting for a hypothetical perfect system can cost more than it saves.

We Do Not Think This Way About Other Expenses
A 50% or 60% Solar Offset Is Not a Failed System
First, it helps to separate solar offset from solar value.
A 50% offset means the system should produce about half of the electricity the home uses over a year. A 60% offset means it should produce about 60%. The exact bill savings will depend on utility rates, fixed charges, production, and how the homeowner pays for solar.
Still, replacing half of the electricity you buy from the utility can create meaningful savings. The remaining bill does not cancel the value of the solar electricity produced on your roof.
We do not usually reject a 50% discount because it is not 100%. Nobody turns down half off a grocery bill because the groceries are not completely free. Solar deserves the same common-sense analysis.
The real questions are whether the production estimate is realistic and whether the financial terms are fair.
The Roof Limiting Your System Today Will Probably Still Limit It Later
Many homeowners assume panel technology is the main reason their proposed system cannot reach a 100% offset. In reality, the roof is often the limiting factor.
Every property has physical constraints. These may include:
- Limited roof area
- Shade from trees or nearby buildings
- Chimneys, vents, skylights, and roof hatches
- Required fire-code setbacks
- Roof direction and slope
- Different roof levels or additions
- Structural or electrical limitations
Waiting five years will not make a DC rowhouse roof larger. It will not remove a chimney, move the neighboring building, or eliminate safety setbacks. A better panel may produce somewhat more electricity in the same area, but it cannot erase every physical limitation.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s homeowner guide confirms that roof size, shape, slope, age, and tree cover all affect rooftop solar potential.
Therefore, if your roof supports a 55% offset today, it is not reasonable to assume that waiting a few years will automatically turn it into a 100% offset.
If solar covers half your bill because of fixed roof limits, better panels may help a little. However, they will not make the roof larger or remove the objects blocking usable space.

Solar Panel Technology Is Mature
Solar panels are not new or experimental products. Modern silicon solar technology has developed over decades. Manufacturers have already made major gains in power, durability, and efficiency.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, commercially produced solar modules generally achieve efficiencies around 20% to 22%. Silicon also remains the dominant material used in solar manufacturing.
That does not mean progress has stopped. Manufacturers will continue increasing panel wattage and efficiency. However, homeowners should not expect today’s standard panel to become twice as productive in the next few years.
To understand why, consider a simple example. Suppose a roof can fit a system that provides a 55% offset using modules with 22% efficiency. If future modules reached 25% efficiency and everything else stayed equal, the same roof might reach roughly a 62% or 63% offset.
That would be an improvement. However, it would not turn 55% into 100%.
In other words, if solar covers half your bill today, a modest increase in panel efficiency will not suddenly eliminate the other half.
In addition, higher panel wattage does not always come entirely from better efficiency. Some newer panels produce more power because they are physically larger. A larger panel may not help on a small or complicated roof where the available space is already tight.
What About the Next Breakthrough in Solar Technology?
Researchers are working on exciting technologies, including tandem solar cells that combine silicon with materials such as perovskites. These designs may eventually produce more electricity from the same amount of space.
However, laboratory progress and a product ready for thousands of residential roofs are not the same thing.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has explained that tandem technology still faces important questions involving manufacturing scale, cost, performance, and long-term reliability. The Department of Energy also notes that perovskite solar products are not yet manufactured at scale and must overcome several challenges before becoming commercially competitive.
Even after a breakthrough reaches the market, homeowners may face other questions:
- How much will the new panels cost?
- Will installers have reliable access to them?
- How long is the manufacturer’s warranty?
- Does the manufacturer have a proven service history?
- How will the panels perform after 10, 20, or 30 years?
- Will local permitting and utility requirements support the new equipment?
New technology may be impressive. Still, being first is not always the same as receiving the best value.
Today’s solar panels are proven, widely available, and designed to operate for decades. Waiting for an unproven product involves its own risks.

Waiting for 100% Can Mean Years of 0% Savings
This is the part people often overlook.
If solar covers half your bill today, waiting does not preserve those savings for later. You lose the electricity the system could have produced during every month you delay.
Suppose a proposed system would generate 6,000 kilowatt-hours per year. Waiting three years for better technology could mean buying roughly 18,000 additional kilowatt-hours from the utility during that period. Actual production varies, but the basic point remains: electricity that your roof could produce today cannot be recovered later.
The system installed three years from now does not go back and credit you for those lost years.
Most importantly, when solar covers half your bill, every year of delay means another year without those available savings.
Meanwhile, several things can change:
- Utility rates may increase
- Solar incentives and programs may change
- Financing terms may become more expensive
- Equipment and labor costs may change
- Your roof may need additional work
- Permitting or interconnection rules may become stricter
Nobody can promise that every future change will make solar less attractive. However, nobody can promise that waiting will produce a better deal either.
What we can evaluate is the system, pricing, and savings available now.
Better Panels May Not Matter as Much as You Think
Homeowners often focus heavily on panel efficiency. Yet efficiency is only one part of a solar project.
System design, shade, inverter selection, installation quality, utility rules, warranties, and long-term service can matter just as much. A highly efficient panel installed in a poor location will not outperform a well-designed system simply because its specification sheet shows a higher percentage.
In addition, a few extra percentage points of panel efficiency may produce less financial value than several years of missed savings.
For many homeowners, the better question is not, “Will panels improve someday?” They almost certainly will.
The better question is, “Will waiting for that improvement save me more than installing a good system now?”
In many cases, the answer is no.
If solar covers half your bill now, several years of missed production may cost more than the value of a future efficiency improvement.

Do Not Confuse “Not Perfect” With “Not Worthwhile”
When solar covers half your bill, the other half does not cancel the benefit. You still buy less electricity from the utility. You also reduce the portion of your household budget exposed to future utility rate changes.
Still, partial solar is not automatically a good deal. The price and contract terms matter. The production estimate must also be realistic. Therefore, homeowners should review the full proposal instead of assuming that every solar project makes financial sense.
That is the honest way to evaluate it.
When Does Waiting Make Sense?
There are legitimate reasons to delay a solar installation. For example, you may need to replace the roof soon. You may be planning an addition that changes the design. You may also need time to improve your finances or compare contract options.
Those are practical reasons based on the home or household.
Waiting only because you hope panels will soon become powerful enough to double your solar offset is different. Current technology trends do not support that assumption for most homes.
Before delaying, ask these questions:
- What specifically prevents the proposed system from reaching 100%?
- Would better panel efficiency actually solve that problem?
- How much electricity could the available system produce now?
- How much could I spend on utility electricity while waiting?
- Which current incentives, programs, or financing terms could change?
- Does the proposal make financial sense without reaching 100%?
These questions create a much clearer comparison between acting now and waiting.

If Solar Covers Half Your Bill, Should You Move Forward Now?
If solar covers half your bill on fair terms, that can still be a worthwhile project. The same is true for a 60%, 70%, or 80% offset.
Partial solar is not automatically a good deal. The price, contract, equipment, installer, warranties, and production estimate all matter. However, rejecting a strong proposal only because it falls short of 100% can be an expensive mistake.
Your roof is unlikely to become larger. Today’s panels are already mature and efficient. Future improvements will probably help, but they are unlikely to double the output of a constrained roof anytime soon.
Most importantly, waiting for 100% can leave you with 0% solar savings for years.
