The 30% Solar Tax Credit Could Disappear by the End of 2025 — Here’s Why You Must Act Now

June 16, 2025 · Patrick Cavanaugh · Solar Incentives and Rebates

The federal solar tax credit is at risk due to a budget bill passed by the House. Take action to save the tax credit, and go solar today.

🚨 The 30% Solar Tax Credit Could Disappear by the End of 2025 — Here’s Why You Must Act Now

The House just passed a sweeping budget bill that could eliminate the 30% federal solar tax credit (ITC) for homeowners as early as December 31, 2025. If this bill becomes law, it would end one of the most powerful tools available to help families go solar affordably, nearly a decade ahead of schedule.

This bill, nicknamed Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” doesn’t just attack the residential solar credit (Section 25D) — it also slashes the commercial solar tax credit (Section 48E), making it nearly impossible for solar companies to offer $0-down Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) starting in 2026.

We’ve been warning for months that the federal solar incentives might not last forever — and now the clock is ticking.

🛑 What’s In The Bill?

  • Ends the 30% residential solar tax credit (25D) on December 31, 2025
  • Blocks third-party-owned systems (like PPAs) from claiming commercial credits (48E) retroactive to January 1, 2025
  • Accelerates the commercial tax credit phase-out to just 60 days after the bill is signed
  • Makes timelines for large solar projects nearly impossible to meet

Although the Senate still has to weigh in — and some Republicans there have voiced support for clean energy — we can’t afford to wait and hope.

This bill is moving fast. The GOP wants it signed by the Fourth of July.

What This Means for DC Homeowners

If you’re planning to go solar — especially through a $0-down PPA like most of our customers do — you could lose your chance to go solar with no upfront cost if this bill passes.

  • 🏡 Cash & Loan Purchases: You may still be eligible for the 30% credit if installed in time.
  • ⚠️ $0-Down PPAs: Could lose eligibility for the tax credit even if installed in 2025 due to retroactive changes.
  • 💸 System Prices Will Increase: Without the tax credit, the cost of solar could rise by 30% overnight.
