What We Learned After Interviewing Our Head Roofer During a Snowy Week in DC

February 3, 2026 · Patrick Cavanaugh · Roofing Education

Winter slows roofing work down in Washington, DC. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures make installs difficult and sometimes impossible. During one of those slower weeks, we decided to use the downtime productively.

We sat down with our head of roofing, TJ, and asked him the questions homeowners usually only think about once something has already gone wrong. We asked about roof leaks, insurance pressure, pricing confusion, and why roofing feels so stressful for so many people.

This post is not a sales pitch. It is an inside look at how roofing actually works and what homeowners should understand before a small issue turns into a big one.

TJ Bobbit – Head of Roofing at Uprise Solar and Roofing

Why Most Homeowners Call a Roofer

Almost every roofing call starts with the same problem: a leak.

Sometimes it is a slow drip. Sometimes it is a stain on the ceiling. Other times it is water running down a wall after a storm. Very few homeowners call a roofer just to be proactive.

Winter is especially hard on roofs. Snow and ice find small gaps, melt, refreeze, and expand. Flashings fail. Roof membranes crack. What looked fine in the fall suddenly leaks in late winter or early spring.

Another growing reason people reach out is insurance. TJ shared that insurance companies are now flying drones over homes, inspecting roofs remotely, and threatening to drop coverage if they see deterioration. That pressure alone is causing more homeowners to call roofers earlier than they otherwise would.

The First Fear Is Not the Roof

It Is the Cost

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation was how little homeowners know about roofing costs.

That uncertainty creates anxiety. People assume the worst. They worry the roof is about to collapse or that there is major structural damage hiding out of sight.

In reality, many roof leaks are manageable if caught early. The fear usually comes from not knowing what is normal, what is serious, and what can wait.

The most common questions we hear right away are:
How bad is this?
Is the damage going to spread?
Can you give me any idea what this might cost?

Those are fair questions. The hard truth is that it is impossible to give a real roofing quote without seeing the roof in person. What homeowners can see from inside the house often represents only part of the issue. A small interior leak can be caused by a much larger problem on the roof, or it can be something isolated that is straightforward to fix.

Until we are on the roof, taking photos and looking at the full system, any number given over the phone is just a rough guess. Sometimes the damage is exactly what the homeowner suspects. Other times, there is trapped moisture, compromised insulation, rotting decking, or water pooling in areas that are not visible from below.

That is why an on-site inspection matters. It is the only way to understand what is actually going on and what it will take to fix it properly.

What Homeowners Actually Want During a Roof Inspection

Most homeowners are not looking for a sales pitch.

They want relief.

They want someone knowledgeable who can explain what is happening and show proof. According to TJ, about three quarters of homeowners have never been on their roof. When they see photos of pooling water, rotting materials, or rodent damage, the situation becomes real and understandable.

Clear explanations and photos build trust quickly. Homeowners feel better when they understand what they are looking at and why it matters.

Why Roofing Quotes Feel Confusing

Roofing estimates are full of technical terms most people have never heard before.

Demo versus re-roof. Decking. Flashings. Membranes. TPO. R-value.

TJ explained that much of his job during an estimate is translating. He walks homeowners through what is being removed, what is being replaced, how the roof is sealed, and how vents, walls, and AC units are handled.

This is also why roofing quotes vary so much. Two bids can look similar but include very different scopes of work. Cheap quotes often leave out critical steps that homeowners cannot see until years later.

Where Cheap Roofs Go Wrong

The biggest roofing mistakes are usually hidden.

Some contractors install new roofing over multiple old layers. Others reuse insulation that has already been compromised by water. Some ignore slope issues that cause water to pool instead of draining.

These shortcuts lower the upfront price, but they also lead to premature failures. TJ told us many homeowners call back years later saying the roof is leaking and the original contractor is nowhere to be found.

That regret is common.

The Truth About Insurance and Roof Claims

Insurance adds another layer of confusion for homeowners.

One important point TJ stressed is that filing an insurance claim should not be automatic. Policies vary widely. In some cases, it makes sense to address interior damage first. In others, homeowners should understand their policy before involving insurance at all.

The biggest mistake is assuming insurance will handle everything without understanding the long-term consequences.

The Roofing Advice Every Homeowner Should Hear

TJ’s advice was simple and direct.

Do not self-diagnose.

If you would not tell a doctor how to treat you, do not tell a roofer how to fix your roof. Ask questions. Look at the photos. Make sure you understand what is being recommended and why.

A roof is not a short-term fix. Done properly, it is a 20 to 25 year investment in your home.

Why We Are Sharing This

Roofing feels opaque to most homeowners. It does not have to.

You deserve honest answers, clear explanations, and a straightforward assessment of whether something needs attention now or can wait. Sometimes the best outcome is learning that your roof is not as bad as you feared. Other times, catching an issue early saves a lot of money and stress.

If you are dealing with a roof leak, insurance pressure, or just want an honest opinion, start with a conversation. Understanding what is actually going on is always the first step.
