Why Your Next Pepco Bill Might Shock You This Summer

May 5, 2026 · Patrick Cavanaugh · Energy Rate Updates, Homeowner FAQs + Guides, Solar Education, Solar in Washington DC

For most DC homeowners, the real impact of rising electricity costs hasn’t fully landed yet.

That’s because spring bills are usually low. Windows are open, AC is off, and energy usage is pretty light.

But once the heat hits and your air conditioning starts running every day, that’s when things get real.

This summer is likely going to be a wake-up call.

The Part No One Feels… Until Now

Over the past year, electricity rates in DC have increased significantly. For many homeowners, the total impact is around 40 percent when you factor in both supply and delivery charges.

The issue is that rate increases are easy to ignore when your bill is small.

A $90 spring bill turning into $110 doesn’t feel like a big deal.

But zoom out for a second. Since around 2020, total electricity costs in DC have roughly doubled for many homeowners.

So while last year’s increase feels big, it’s really part of a much larger shift that’s been building for years.

And that same increase hits very differently in the summer.

Let’s Do the Math

Let’s say your average summer electric bill last year was $180.

With a 40 percent increase, that same usage now costs:

$180 → $252

That’s an extra $72 per month, just to keep your home at the same temperature.

Now stretch that across the full cooling season:

  • 3 hot months = +$216
  • 5 hot months = +$360

And that’s assuming your usage doesn’t go up, which it usually does during heat waves.

This is where people start to feel it.

Zooming Out: This Didn’t Happen Overnight

What most people are feeling this summer isn’t just about the last year.

It’s been building for a while.

Since around 2020, total electricity costs in DC have roughly doubled for many homeowners when you look at both supply and delivery charges together.

That means the same home using the same amount of power today could be paying close to twice what it did just a few years ago.

For example:

If your monthly bill was around $120 in 2020, that same usage today could easily be in the range of $220 to $250 depending on the season.

It’s not that people suddenly started using twice as much electricity.

It’s that electricity itself has quietly become a lot more expensive.

Why This Is Happening

A lot of people assume their bill is going up because they’re using more electricity.

That’s only part of it.

The bigger driver right now is the cost of electricity itself, especially delivery charges, which are approved by the District of Columbia Public Service Commission.

In simple terms, it costs more to deliver power to your home than it did a year ago, and that cost gets passed directly to you.

These increases didn’t come all at once. They’ve been approved in phases over time, which is why a lot of people are only now realizing how much things have changed.

Why It Feels Like It Happens All At Once

This is the part that catches people off guard.

Rate increases happen quietly over time. You don’t really notice them in mild months.

But then summer hits.

Your AC starts running all day, your usage spikes, and suddenly the higher rates are being applied to a much larger bill.

It feels like your costs jumped overnight, even though the increase was building in the background.

One Way People Are Avoiding This

There is a reason a lot of DC homeowners who already went solar aren’t reacting the same way right now.

They’ve already insulated themselves from a big portion of these rate increases.

Instead of paying whatever Pepco charges each month, they’re producing their own power and replacing part of that bill with a lower, more predictable cost.

That’s why many of our customers aren’t surprised by what’s happening this summer. They’ve already been through the math and made the switch.

Why This Window May Not Last

Here’s the honest part most people don’t hear.

The programs that make no-cost solar possible in DC are not guaranteed to stay the same forever. They rely on incentives and policy structures that are already starting to shift.

As those tighten, it becomes harder to offer solar with little to no upfront cost.

There’s a real chance that this is one of the last strong windows for homeowners in DC to take advantage of these programs in their current form.

What Homeowners Are Starting to Do About It

More homeowners in DC are starting to look for ways to stabilize their energy costs.

Not because they were planning to make a change this year, but because the current system feels unpredictable.

When your bill can swing by $50 to $100 a month depending on the weather and rate changes, it gets hard to plan around.

Solar is coming into the conversation more now because it offers a way to lock in a lower rate and avoid being fully exposed to future increases.

The Bottom Line

If your Pepco bill jumps this summer, you’re not alone.

A lot of homeowners are about to see the real impact of higher electricity rates for the first time.

Some have already made a move to get ahead of it. Others are just starting to look into their options.

The earlier you understand what’s happening, the more control you have over what you pay.
